Watch Our Story: Navigating Cancer as LGBTQIA+ Parents – Our Bright Spot Network Panel
Stories of Hope
In the thick of cancer treatment, parenting young kids, and just trying to make it through the day, hearing other people’s stories gave us hope… and it still does. Hot take, but I think, “misery loves company” really means that when you’re down, you want inspiration to keep your head up from others who “get it”.
There’s been many times when we’ve thought, if they got through it, maybe we can too.
Cue Daniel Bedingfield’s Gotta Get Thru This playing in the background.
So when Bright Spot Network asked us to share our story on a panel about navigating cancer as LGBTQ+ parents, we were honored—and honestly, a little terrified. On camera, cancer discussion, in front of strangers?
Not exactly our comfort zone. But we also knew how much other people’s stories meant to us—so we said yes, let’s do this.

Bright Spot Network
First things first: Bright Spot Network’s the realest.
They support young cancer survivors who are also parenting small children—people just like us. We’ve loved attending their workshops with our kids, and their support groups truly get how overwhelming it is to manage cancer treatment while raising little ones.
It’s a compassionate, practical, and validating community. Highly recommend!
What We Talked About
In the panel, we shared our experience as queer parents navigating the healthcare system and some of the challenges we faced during those early days and months after Sophia’s diagnosis.
We also talked about our Elsa Extraordinary book series, and how storytelling helps our family process big emotions with little kids. In fact, you can even receive a FREE copy of our first book, Mommy and Elsa Are Wellness Warriors: A Story About Love and Cancer (affiliate link) through their Bright Reads program.
